Zhang graduated from the Department of Applied Physics of Tongji University in Shanghai in 1965. He is the honorary chairman of Chunhui Company a professor-level senior engineer.He has served as director of Nanjing Glass Fiber Research Design Institute, chairman of Nanjing Science Technology Association, utive director of China Silicate Society, chairman of China Silicate Society Glass Fiber Branch, etc.He enjoys special government allowances from the State Council.

   Zhang's research achievements in the field of non-communication optical fibers special glass fibers:

· Air-cooling technology for drawing high-strength glass fiber root needle tube in a platinum-substituting furnace.

· Development of three-dimensional fabrics for heat protection glass fiber fabrics for radomes.

· 20-hole double-crucible wire drawing technology extra-large double-head wire drawing machine, multi-row porous co-extrusion plastic optical fiber technology.

· Manufacturing technology of non-communication optical fibers such as multi-component glass optical fibers, plastic optical fibers, image beams.

· A daylighting device that automatically tracks the sun.

Zhang has won national provincial awards for many times:

· In 1992, the second prize of the National Invention Award,

· Second Prize of National Science Technology Progress Award in 1985, 1995 2001

· Zhang has published 19 papers. In 2001, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
